УчастникA bottom-entry fill valve, by contrast, plumbers merchants takes its supply vertically through the base of the cistern, in line with where a rising main or supply pipe comes straight up from the floor void or from beneath a low-level suite. This arrangement is generally quieter, since the incoming water enters below the surface of the tank rather than splashing in from the side, which is why many modern and replacement fill valves are built as bottom-entry as standard, often with a side-entry option built into the same body.
Specifying a fill valve replacement sounds like a simple job until the plumber gets to site and finds the water supply enters the cistern from an unexpected direction. Fill valves are built around one of two entry positions, side-entry or bottom-entry, and the wrong choice means either a valve that will not connect to the existing pipework or one that fouls the cistern wall on the way in.
Cable-actuated systems use a flexible cable in place of the rigid spindle, which allows the button to be positioned somewhere other than directly above the flush valve, useful on concealed cisterns and certain close-coupled designs where the lid mechanism does not line up with the valve beneath. The cable itself can stretch, kink or seize inside its outer sheath over time, and a button that has become stiff, or one that no longer springs back after use, usually points to the cable rather than the flush valve itself.

Noise is a real factor when deciding between the two. A side-entry valve introducing water above the surface tends to produce more splash and a higher-pitched fill sound, which shows up as a complaint on quieter properties such as flats with shared walls. Bottom-entry valves that fill below the surface are noticeably quieter, and swapping a noisy side-entry unit for a bottom-entry equivalent is a common upgrade even where nothing has technically failed.
Once inside, the cistern behind a concealed frame is usually a compact, purpose-built tank rather than a standard visible cistern, and the fill valve and flush valve fitted to it are sized to fit that specific frame’s depth and width. This is where sourcing spares gets harder than for a standard cistern: frame manufacturers often specify particular valve models to fit their tank dimensions, and a valve that works fine in a standard low-level cistern may simply not fit inside a concealed frame’s tighter cavity.
